Young Physician Leaders (YPL) develops future leaders from an international group of young, promising healthcare and public health professionals. The program was launched in 2011 by the InterAcademy Partnership for Health (IAP, formerly the InterAcademy Medical Panel) and now brings together a network of more than 130 alumni.

During the program, participants explore themes concerning the sources of leadership, the different styles a leader needs in order to collaborate with superiors, peers, and followers, and the complex processes of decision making and organizational change. Participants will present a session on the concerns of young physicians at the World Health Summit, which will be taking place just steps away from the ESMT Campus. They will also have the opportunity to visit some of Berlin’s leading scientific institutions and meet senior leaders from the global health sector. Most importantly, participants of the Young Physician Leaders program will network, learn from each other, and join the worldwide network of YPL alumni.

Since 2016, the program is being run as a collaboration between IAP for Health, ESMT Berlin and the World Health Summit.

 

Target audience

Top professionals under the age of 40 from the global health sector: clinicians, educators, policy advocates engaged with the public on critical health issues, and emerging healthcare and public health leaders from the non-profit and private sectors.

Meet the teaching staff

Nora Grasselli (PROGRAM DIRECTOR)

Nora’s academic interests lie in group dynamics, leadership, and organizational psychodynamics. She studied management, with a focus on organization, and completed her PhD on group dynamics at HEC Paris. During her doctoral studies, she was a visiting fellow at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Prior to joining ESMT, Nora was a strategy consultant for the Boston Consulting Group, where she consulted for multinational corporations on organizational issues. She also worked as a lecturer for MBA and executive programs at various business schools, including HEC Paris, Saïd Business School (Oxford), Reims Management School, and the Central European University.

 

Jo Ivey Boufford

President of the New York Academy of Medicine, MD

Jo is professor emeritus of Public Service, Health Policy and Management at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and clinical professor of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine. She is co-director of the National Program Office of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholars program. She served as dean of the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. Prior to that, she served as principal deputy assistant secretary for health in the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). While at HHS, she served as the US representative on the Executive Board of the World Health Organization.

Jo served as director of the King’s Fund College in London. The King’s Fund is a royal charity dedicated to the support of health and social services in the United Kingdom. She was the president of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, which is the largest municipal system in the United States.

Jo was awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship at the Institute of Medicine in Washington, DC. She served as a member of the National Council on Graduate Medical Education and the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. She currently serves on the boards of the United Hospital Fund, Public Health Solutions, and the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. Elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine, she served as its foreign secretary and is a member of its Board on Global Health. She received honorary doctorate of science degrees from the State University of New York, Brooklyn; New York Medical College; Pace University; and Toledo University. She was elected a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.

 

Francis de Véricourt

Professor of Management Science, ESMT Berlin

Francis’s general research interest is in operations excellence with an overlap in managerial decision-making. His current focus is on business sustainability and social innovation. His research has been published in leading management journals, including Management Science, Operations Research, and Manufacturing & Service Operations Management. His work has won several awards. He is the current chair of the MSOM sustainability special interest group of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Francis is also on the editorial boards of several leading academic journals.
