Work has become an increasingly important part of our lives. It significantly affects our well-being, as we dedicate more and more time to the business we are in, both inside and outside of our jobs. Similarly, our expectations of work have also multiplied. We seek passion, meaning, fulfillment – and at the end of the day, we want our work to make us feel proud. We want personal growth, a career, and respectful relationships that are built on trust. Our expectations sometimes may feel irreconcilable, and with the increasing pressure to perform to higher standards, it is inevitable that we feel stressed and question what we do and why. It is time that we start thinking more about happiness and not only effectiveness.

We offer this one-day seminar as an opportunity for participants to reflect on their state of personal well-being and fulfillment, and to explore approaches that will help enhance their overall happiness. We also want to demonstrate methods that will serve to strengthen resilience toward stress, and to better prepare participants to deal with potential frustration and disappointment they may encounter.

Our program is based on the most recent research on happiness, which shows that happiness is more dependent upon our approach to life and work, rather than the environment in which we work. This one-day seminar will also delve into the link between happiness and purpose, which is particularly relevant for the workplace. In addition to the program’s focus on ways to increase happiness levels, there will be discussions on the latest research findings on resilience and stress management.

Meet the staff

Bülent Gögdün (Program Director)

Bülent Gögdün focuses at ESMT Berlin on technology-based industries and executive coaching. Having studied mechanical engineering, Bülent enjoys working with technology companies. His four years of work experience as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group triggered a personal search for alternative consulting approaches to support the development of executives and organizations. Today, he strongly believes in coaching as one of the most effective leadership development tools and has continually participated in professional training in this field.

During his 10 years of coaching activities, again and again he has had conversations that have inspired him beyond typical effective leadership. These conversations have motivated him to explore the topic of happiness and purpose so that he can better advise and encourage his participants.


Francine Espinoza Petersen

is an associate professor of marketing at ESMT Berlin. She received her PhD in marketing and psychology from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, USA, and her Master's degree in marketing with great distinction from UFRGS, Brazil. Francine's research
focuses on emotions and understanding what makes people happy. Her research is applied to affect-laden consumption episodes such as indulgent or sustainable consumption or retail/ shopping experiences. Her research has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Consumer Psychology, International Journal of Research in Marketing, and Journal of Business Research. As a PhD student, she received awards for outstanding marketing doctoral student and for academic achievement. She teaches topics related to consumer behavior, branding, luxurymarketing, and marketing research, as well as emotions and happiness/well-being.


Konstantin Korotov

is an associate professor of organizational behavior and the director of the ESMT Center for Leadership Development Research (CLDR), which he co-founded with Professor Manfred Kets de Vries. In addition to his academic work, he has more than 20 years of practical management and leadership development experience in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. Konstantin conducts research on leadership development, leadership coaching, careers, and executive education.

He has authored, co-authored, and coedited six books and multiple academic and practitioner articles, business cases, and book chapters on leadership development and executive coaching. He has won multiple awards for his case studies, articles, and teaching excellence. Konstantin is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies. Additionally, he is the founder of the ESMT Coaching Colloquia series – premier professional development events for the world’s leading executive coaches.
